Jan. 24 to 30 – Recent Las Vegas News

Here’s some of the news relevant to or about Las Vegas Nevada and gaming that came out during the last week:

Jan. 24, 2011  Atomic Liquor, the oldest bar in Las Vegas and owner of liquor license #00001, has closed. The site’s transformation from a café to a bar in 1951 coincided with the first atom-bomb tests at the Nevada Test Site and the venue was popular with everyone from Roy Rogers to members of the Rat Pack; even Barbra Streisand recalls playing pool there in her memoirs. The bar remained under the original husband-and-wife ownership of Joe and Stella Sobchik until first Joe, and then Stella, three months later on January 15 of this year, passed away.

It’s been reported that the Primm Valley Resorts are undergoing its first major remodel since it opened in the ’90s. The $8.5 million upgrade is due to be completed in April, and includes hotel-room renovations at Buffalo Bill’s and on ongoing room-remodel and casino-upgrade at Primm Valley is halfway complete.

Jan. 25, 2011   The Standard & Poor’s (S&P) ratings agency yesterday issued a negative outlook on CityCenter. They gave the Strip metaresort a "B-" corporate credit rating stating that the complex will have trouble generating enough cash to justify its current capital structure. S&P said holders of the $600 million in notes due 2017 which is part of a recent $1.5 billion offering used to pay down debt and extend due dates can expect "negligible recovery."

Jan. 26, 2011    Station Casinos is ending its experiment with the Coco’s chain and relaunching its own coffee shops. Palace Station has already made the switch, with Sunset Station following on Thursday, Boulder Station in late March, and Santa Fe Station and Texas Station by the end of June.

Jan. 27, 2011  Clark County’s population only edged up slightly in 2010, according to the county planning department. The latest population estimate from the county is 2,036,358. That’s about 1.5 percent more than the 2009 population of 2,006,347, a lackluster end to a decade in which the state’s population increased by 35 percent.

Jan. 28, 2011  Talk about mixed ratings: Las Vegas has been identified as the 8th "rudest city" in the U.S. (L.A. was named the rudest) by Travel and Leisure magazine . On a more positive note, Las Vegas was also ranked as as the No. 1 spot for luxury hotels and a wild weekend, and the second-best city for high-end shopping.

Jan. 29, 2011   International Game Technology (IGT) has released its Cleopatra slot game for the iPhone. The catch is that the application is available only to members of MGM Resorts International’s (MRI) MLife rewards club. With the explosion of apps, t’s likely that others will follow (other manufacturers, games and devices).

Jan. 30, 2011  Airline traffic at McCarran International Airport was off 1.8% in 2010 compared to 2009. The total count of fliers (both in and out) was 39,757,000.

The Best Overall Hotels in Las Vegas

Having already covered the best overall hotel casinos in Las Vegas, I thought it would be good to look at the best hotels because many people want the best place to stay even if they don’t gamble or prefer to gamble elsewhere. According to a fairly recent survey of the readers of “Strictly Slots”, the best overall hotel casinos in Las Vegas are:

On the Las Vegas Strip:   #1 Wynn Las Vegas   #2 Bellagio               #3 Caesars Palace

In downtown Las Vegas:   #1 Golden Nugget      #2  Fitzgeralds         #3 Main Street Casino

For Las Vegas locals:       #1 Rio                      #2 M Resort             #3  Red Rock

Not surprisingly, many of the best overall hotels are also the best overall hotel casinos (see my Jan. 11th posting). Although It’s difficult for me to argue with any of the above choices, they are also many other very good to great hotels in Las Vegas which should be considered. Even though opinions can vary greatly, I hope this information is useful to anyone who is planning where to stay the next time they are in Las Vegas.

Finding The Best Video Poker Machines

Although it lacks the bluffing and potential huge winnings often associated with live poker, video poker does require skill if you want to play successfully long term plus it can yield greater than 100% payouts if you know how and where to play. This posting cannot begin to cover the many ins and outs of video poker but it can tell you how to find the best video poker machines in Las Vegas (and many other places). To begin playing video poker successfully, you must know that video poker games vary greatly in their payouts and that players should play video poker games on machines with the highest payouts such as 100.76% return (with perfect pay) Full Pay Deuces Wild (FPDW). You can click on –>  http://www.vpfree2.com/casinos/by-region/las-vegas.html to find the best video poker machines in Las Vegas (or if you click on other regions, elsewhere). At the page you get to using the above link, you will find a list of Las Vegas hotels and/or casinos with the the best video poker games at various denominations that each casino has. You can click on a casino’s name for more details and if you click on “Listings” for any game shown you will find the approximate location of the machines within the casino for the game listed. If your interested, take some time at the vp2free2.com website to find out what it has to offer. Also, if your seriously interested in playing video poker, I suggest that you should thoroughly research it, choose one or two games to learn and practice it (or them) at sites like http://www.freeslots.com/poker.htm or by using software like “Video Poker for Winners” as much as possible. Books like “Video Poker for the Intelligent Beginner (Gambling Theories Methods)” by Bob Dancer can also be of value to anyone wanting to learn about video poker. Choosing, practicing  and playing the best video games on the best machines can actually make you money. Keep in mind, however, that playing video poker games with high returns at or near perfection doesn’t guarantee that you will come out ahead each time you play. It does mean you should have a chance to at least break even over the long haul and hopefully have some fun. Here’s hoping that you hit a Royal Flush if you decide to play.

Jan. 17 to 23 – Recent Las Vegas News

Here’s some of the news relevant to or about Las Vegas Nevada that came out during the last week:

Jan. 17, 2011  It may not seem like a big deal to anyone but those of us who spend time downtown but downtown finally has a convenient grocery store. Resnicks is a 1,400-square-foot "bodega" located in SoHo Lofts (900 Las Vegas Blvd. South.) that features vintage and modern artwork and stocks organic and eco-friendly lines, as well as home-made sandwiches and salads.

Opening in what I think is its third Las Vegas home, the popular comedy “Defending the Caveman” debuted at Harrah’s.

Jan. 18, 2011  A man jumped several stories to his death at the Imperial Palace on Monday afternoon. Police said the apparent suicide occurred between 1 pm and 1:30 pm at the Strip resort.

The temperature hit 74 degrees at McCarran International Airport  (the valley’s official weather station) on Monday. That shattered the previous high for this date was 72 degrees posted on Jan. 17, 1976.

Jan. 20, 2011  Not Las Vegas but the historic Cal Neva, the Lake Tahoe resort casino once owned by Frank Sinatra and frequented by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and the Rat Pack, that closed last April after three years of operating at a loss is reopening. But now operators say they plan to reopen the casino with limited gaming as soon as early February, beginning with video poker machines at the bar and slots in the lobby.

Every Thursday, the PBR Rockbar in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood will be have live music from Against The Grain and an open bar for $35, featuring all Jack Daniels drinks + draft beers, from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m.

Jan. 21, 2011  Somebody had a most extraordinary Thursday. There was a Megabucks hit for more than $12,700,000 at the Aria Resort and Casino.

After a hiatus from performing in Las Vegas while they took their show to Broadway for a limited holiday run, brother-and-sister act “Donny & Marie” are back on stage at the Flamingo Las Vegas.

Jan. 22, 2011   A 40,000-seat domed stadium that would host UNLV football games and probably other events has been proposed for an area close to the campus between the Thomas & Mac Center basketball venue and Paradise Road. The UNLV Running Rebels currently play at Sam Boyd Stadium, located way out beyond Boulder Highway.

Jan. 23, 2011  Sixty years ago (Jan. 27, 1951), a B-50 Superfortress flew through the pre-dawn darkness 3½ miles above desolate Frenchman Flat and opened its bomb bay doors and exploded a 1,000-pound atomic bomb dubbed Able over the Nevada Test Site marking the beginning of the atomic age in Nevada

Hoover Dam

One of the best things to see and do not far outside Las Vegas is the 75 year old Hoover Dam (originally named Boulder Dam). You can get information about Hoover Dam’s 75th anniversary (which was September 30, 2010) and history at http://www.lvrj.com/Hoover_Dam_75th_Anniversary.html. Everyone should a free stroll long the dam and look out over Lake Mead to the north and the Colorado River gorge to the south at least once in their life. It’s about 30 to 35 miles southeast of Las Vegas and is easy to get to by car. The Hoover Dam visitors center is open daily (except Thanksgiving and Christmas), from 9 am - 6 pm. Parking is $7 in the parking garage which is open from 8:00 am to 4:45 pm and you must pay if you (tours are restricted to those over 8 years old) want to take the Dam and/or Powerplant Tour (go to http://www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/service/index.html for prices and tour times plus dam and other tour information) or if you don’t have a car or don’t want to drive and you want to take a bus or jeep tour. Below find Vegasreservations.com”s Hoover (Boulder) Dam and Lake Mead You Tube video:
