Feb. 21 to 27 – Recent Las Vegas News
Monday February 28, 2011 by admin.
Here’s some of the news relevant to or about Las Vegas Nevada that came out during the last week:
Feb. 21, 2011 The District at Green Valley Ranch ( a mixed-used development by American Nevada Co.) has been sold at public auction for $50 million to Village Walk LLC, a Nevada limited liability company with a mailing address in Miami Beach, Florida.
Ron’s Steakhouse, named from long time General Manager and former Las Vegas mayor Ron Lurie, has opened at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur. It’s the first fine dining restaurant at the casino since the closing of the Yukon Grille in 2006. It’s open Wednesday-Sunday, 5 to 10 p.m.
Feb. 22, 2011 The price of existing homes in Las Vegas tumbled to their lowest level in two decades. SalesTraq reported the median price paid for existing homes in January was $109,000. This was down 9 percent from the $120,000 paid in January 2010 and is the lowest price since 1991. The median price was $114,500 in December.
Bags to Go, the company that gets your luggage to the airport and provides your boarding pass in advance has added the Sahara to its client list. The fee is $10 per bag. Other casinos using the service are Luxor, MGM Grand, Venetian, and Palazzo.
Feb. 23, 2011 CityCenter has apparently had condominium sales of $490 million from 436 units: 61 at Mandarin Oriental, 156 at Vdara, and 219 at Veer. Though encouraging, MGM closed sales on only 26 condos in fourth quarter 2010 thus prompting pessimism among analysts about the number of units that will close in 2011.
The trouble in the Borders bookstore chain has hit Las Vegas with the closing of the Decatur/Sahara store. Five Borders stores (counting the airport location) in the Las Vegas area will remain open.
Feb. 24, 2011 Caesars Entertainment Corp. says it is seeking $400 million in financing to complete an unfinished hotel tower at Caesars Palace and develop a retail, dining and entertainment corridor on the Las Vegas Strip.
Feb. 25, 2011 Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil was released early from the Clark County Detention Center on Friday after serving 10 days of a 15-day DUI sentence.
A new risqué production set in a circus tent is coming to Caesars Palace. “Absinthe” which is being billed as a "decadent adults-only carnival" was originally slated to perform out of the Fontainebleau. It will now take residence at Caesars beginning March 21. The circus-tent theater will be erected on the corner of the Strip and Flamingo Road. Tickets start at $69.
The Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino will be the site of the first "Whopper Bar" in the western U.S.. Whopper Bar will serve Burger King hamburgers built to order by what they are calling "Whopper-istas". The outlet will serve beer and operate around the clock; it’s due to open in a month.
Feb. 26, 2011 More details on part of the Feb 24th news posting: Caesars Entertainment’s CEO Gary Loveman has confirmed his company’s intention to create a entertainment complex on the Strip known as Linq. Loveman says it will be a half-billion-dollar project with a huge London Eye-type Ferris wheel and 190,000 square feet of retail and restaurants. The completion target is 2013.
Feb. 27, 2011 It’s been reported that Steve Wynn is preparing to get married again. Unless things change, wedding bells will ring for hotel developer Steve Wynn and his British fiancée, Andrea Hissom, on April 30th.
Although it has nothing to do with Las Vegas, congratulations to all the Academy Awards winners.

Stay In Vegas For Less Than $40 Per Night
Thursday February 24, 2011 by admin.
Although rates are subject to change (they will probably be higher on weekends, holidays and during certain conventions and events) and don’t include taxes and other possible fees, here’s nine deals, that are available this morning (2/24/2011), that you might want to take advantage of. They are: Palace Station Hotel and Casino (not on the Strip but on the upper left corner of my Strip map) from $14 ($13.99 actually) per night, Tuscany Suites and Casino (2 blocks east on Flamingo Rd.) from $18 ($17.50 actually) per night, Hooters Casino Hotel (1 block east of the Strip on Tropicana) from $24 per night, Sam’s Town Hotel & Casino (on Boulder Hwy. east of the Strip) from $25 per night, Stratosphere Tower – Casino & Resort from $26 per night, Riviera Hotel & Casino from $27 per night, Terribles Hotel & Casino from $29 per nigh, Excalibur Hotel & Casino from $35 per night and Flamingo Las Vegas from $35 per night. Okay maybe 3 star hotels aren’t a big deal in a town with several 5 star hotels and numerous 4 star hotels but with rates as low as $13.99 per night, how can you go wrong?
With average highs of 69 in March and 78 in April (pools usually don’t open until the end of March), Las Vegas can be a great place to visit during the next two months.
You can find other great “Best Rate Guarantee” Las Vegas hotel rates at http://vegasreservations.com/bestrate and a Las Vegas Strip map at http://vegasreservations.com/stripmap.

Feb. 14 to 20 – Recent Las Vegas News
Monday February 21, 2011 by admin.
Happy President’s Day (See 2/18 news item). Here’s some of the news about Las Vegas Nevada that came out during the last week:
Feb. 14, 2011 MGM Resorts International (MRI) which operates 10 casinos on the Strip, including the massive CityCenter development, narrowed its net loss for the quarter that ended Dec. 31 to $139 million, or 29 cents per share. A year ago, MRI lost $434 million, or 98 cents per share. It also told investors the Strip casino giant is poised to capitalize once the Las Vegas gaming market recovers.
Feb. 15, 2011 MGM Resorts International has expanded its Las Vegas apps service to include devices that use Google’s Android system. The app has already been downloaded by 200,000 iPhone users and in March will be rolled out for Blackberry’s OS.
Foreclosure sales have risen sharply in Las Vegas. The number of Las Vegas homes sold to third parties on the courthouse steps rose to 388 in January, a 35.7 percent increase from the previous month, while 1,517 went back to the bank as real estate-owned, or REOs, up 43.2 percent.
It’s been announced that the Miss U.S.A. Pageant will return to the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino to celebrate its 60th anniversary with a live broadcast on Sunday, June 19 (9-11 p.m. ET).
Feb. 16, 2011 The owners of the Double Down Saloon in Las Vegas (a.k.a. "The Happiest Place on Earth"), and its newer sister property in New York, are suing the The Double Down Lounge in Austin, Texas for trademark infringement and false advertising. The Las Vegas and New York clubs say the Austin business has infringed on the Las Vegas and New York trademarks, which they’ve used since at least 1992, since March of last year.
More and more hotels are offering special rates to their Facebook fans and Twitter followers including the Luxor which has just launched a Facebook contest. Check out Twitter and/or Facebook to see if any of the hotels your interested in are offering any special rates.
Feb. 17, 2011 Following the lead of Station Casinos’ discounting of its Feast Buffets, the Palms has discounted its buffet through the end of February. Prices are $5.99 for breakfast, $7.99 for lunch, and $13.99 for dinner.
Feb. 18, 2011 The PBR Rockbar in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood is celebrating President’s Day with a weekend-long "Presidential" Bullriding Contest today through Monday. The party will feature drink specials and a prize for the patron who stays on their mechanical bull the longest.
Feb. 19, 2011 The B.B. King Blues Club at the Mirage has filed for bankruptcy. The filing is not expected to change day-to-day operations in the near term.
Plans for a new amusement park on the Las Vegas Strip have been filed with county officials. The facility would include up to eight rides, including a 500-foot Ferris wheel, along with a convention center, and a restaurant, retail, and office complex. The proposed location is a 9.6-acre site across from Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.
Feb. 20, 2011 Air traffic at McCarran International Airport rose by 5% in January, compared to the same month last year, marking the largest increase in more than three years. It’s a trend that’s expected to continue based on several airlines expanding Las Vegas service.

The Best Slot Clubs in Las Vegas
Tuesday February 15, 2011 by admin.
Because most people who visit Las Vegas do at least some gambling and slot (players) clubs are the key to tracking most visitor’s gambling and therefore receiving comps (free gifts or free (or reduced rates on) rooms, food, etc.), I thought it would be a good idea to post the information listed below. According to a fairly recent survey of the readers of “Strictly Slots”, the best slot clubs in Las Vegas are:
On the Las Vegas Strip: #1 Harrah’s Las Vegas #2 MGM Grand #3 Caesars Palace
In downtown Las Vegas: #1 Fitzgeralds #2 Fremont #3 Main Street Casino
For Las Vegas locals: #1 M Resort #2 Sam’s Town #3 Station Casinos
The above information is not meant to encourage gambling or to indicate that the casinos listed above are the best places to gamble for any particular type of gaming but I do hope this information is useful. Keep in mind that it’s free to join every Players Club that I am aware of and there’s no reason to not get credit for the gambling you do, if any.
