The Las Vegas “First Friday” Art Festival

File this under things you probably didn’t know about Las Vegas. Las Vegas is known for many things but art isn’t usually one of them. This is in spite of the fact that Las Vegas has a thriving art district. There is a large arts festival downtown on the “First Friday” of each month. This Friday (April 1, 2011) is, of course, the next one. “First Friday” is produced by Whirlygig, Inc., a Nevada non-profit arts organization founded in October 2002, in conjunction with more than 80 galleries, restaurants and retail businesses. “First Friday” has grown from 300 attendees in 2002 to recent monthly attendances of 5,000 to 10,000. It now encompasses more than 20 city blocks with five blocks closed to vehicular traffic to create a pedestrian area for the outdoor festivities.

Click Here for more information and Click Here for a map of the event.

Although the event is free, there are Friends of First Friday membership cards for $10 and Best Friends of First Friday memberships cards for $25 available online at http://www.firstfriday-lasvegas.org/foff.html to help support the event. You can also donate by clicking on the “Donate” button at http://www.firstfriday-lasvegas.org/fundraise.html.

Eat, Drink and Do Good

As the title says, here’s a chance to eat, drink and do good (especially if you like “Mexican”).Through May 31th, Ricardo’s Mexican Restaurant (which is at 4001 Decatur Blvd.) is offering a "All-You-Can-Eat Tacos & Frozen Margaritas" special for $25 per person. This promotion benefits local non-profits with $10 of the $25 going back to the charity of the patron’s choice.
