May 23 to 29 – Recent Las Vegas News

Happy Memorial Day (see the Sun 5/29 posting)! Hope you’ve had the opportunity to enjoy a long weekend. I, for one, am very grateful for the sacrifices that have been made by countless others. Here’s some of the news relevant to or about Las Vegas that came out during the last week:

May 23, 2011 Groundbreaking ceremonies were held today for the Skyvue Las Vegas Super Wheel project was approved by Clark County Commissioners back in March at the 11-acre site opposite Mandalay Bay. In addition to a giant observation wheel, which will accommodate up to 200 passengers at a time, the project will also feature restaurants, retail outlets, and other entertainment offerings. It’s due to debut in 2013. The historic mid-century Diamond Inn motel will be demolished to make way for the complex.

Herbst Gaming, which operates the off-Strip Terribles Hotel and Casino and 14 other casinos in three states announced a name change to Affinity Gaming, LLC. Herbst Gaming, now Affinity Gaming, LLC, emerged from bankruptcy at the end of last December with its debt reduced from $1.1 billion to about $350 million.

May 24, 2011 In case somebody cares, Madame Tussauds Las Vegas unveiled a new $300,000 waxwork of Oprah Winfrey to coincide with the ending of her iconic daytime show.

                    It’s been reported that there was a seizure today of 10 more online poker sites when as a result of the indictments, the U.S. Attorney’s office seized Doylesroom.com, Bookmaker.com, 2Betsdi.com, Funtimebingo.com, Goldenarchcasino.com, Truepoker.com, Betmaker.com, Betgrandesports.com, Betehorse.com, and Beted.com.

May 25, 2011 Las Vegas has now been named the sixth most dangerous metropolitan area in the U.S. for pedestrians. That we average 2.5 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents each year, well above the national average of 1.6 deaths per 100,000.

A federal bankruptcy judge today approved Station Casinos Inc.’s plan to turn over its Aliante Station casino to lenders owed more than $378 million as part of restructuring the company as it emerges from bankruptcy.

May 26, 2011  Lake Las Vegas’ Casino MonteLago, which has been closed for more than a year reopened is evening. It opened the public following a VIP party and fireworks display over the lake.

The debut of Nikki Beach at the Tropicana today completed the 54-year-old Strip properties $180 million renovation which also included the renovating all the rooms and public spaces with a "South Beach" theme, new restaurants, and headliner Gladys Knight in the showroom.

Station Casinos LLC’s reorganization plan received approval today from state gaming regulators which clears the way for the company to emerge from bankruptcy.

May 27, 2011  It was reported today that some $340 million in bank-owned commercial real estate properties and delinquent loans were sold during a recent three-day online auction in Las Vegas.

May 28, 2011 Several hotel casinos, including Caesars Palace, Bellagio and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, were completely sold out today which is the peak of the three-day Memorial Day weekend. Rooms are usually plentiful.

May 29, 2011 Because I can’t find any news today worth posting, I thought I would post a link to: Photos: A reminder of what Memorial Day is truly about.

A New Attraction

Las Vegas has many attractions. There’s a very new very unusual attraction that won’t appeal to everyone but for those who are interested and willing to take the time and pay the price (a standard session lasts three and a half hours and costs $400 (which includes a complimentary shuttle service to/from the Strip)). it’s something your not likely to forget. The new attraction is called “Dig This Las Vegas”. It can best be described as America’s first and only "heavy equipment playground" that just opened at 3012 S. Rancho Drive (just minutes from The Strip). It gives participants the opportunity to experience what it’s like to operate a Caterpillar 315CL hydraulic excavators or D5 track-type tractors. “Dig This Las Vegas” is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. Click on –> http://www.digthis.info/ for more information and possible discounts. I guess the question is, can you “Dig This” or not?

New Magic Show

Okay so Las Vegas has several good magic shows but here’s one that’s new and that doesn’t cost a lot that you might find interesting. The Magic of Paris is a new "European-inspired" magic show that is debuting next Wednesday (June 1) at the 4 star rated Paris Las Vegas (which currently has rooms for as low as $59 per night). The show features Parisian sleight of hand artist Stephane Vanel performing close-up magic together with a marionette puppeteer and dancers. The show will take place twice daily at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the Anthony Cools Experience Showroom and general admission tickets are $30. Enjoy!

May 16 to 22 – Recent Las Vegas News

Here’s some of the news relevant to or about Las Vegas Nevada that came out during the last week:

May 16, 2011 The Sahara officially closed today and was chained shut at about 2:15 pm..

Jerry Lewis, 85-year-old comedian, who’s hosted the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Labor Day telethon for 45 years, announced today that he’s retiring and that it’s time for a "new telethon era." In a statement issued today, he said he’ll make his final appearance on the show this Sept. 4, performing his song "You’ll Never Walk Alone."

Station Casinos Inc. reported a smaller 1st quarter loss of $11.8 million compared with a 1st quarter loss of $53.5 million last year as revenues generated at the company’s 18 local casinos remained stable.

May 17, 2011  Research firm SalesTraq reported reported that new-home sales in Las Vegas declined 44% from a year ago to just 267 in April and are on pace to barely break 3,000 for the year. This would be the lowest number that SalesTraq President Larry Murphy said he could remember in more than 30 years.

Counter to the above, fewer Las Vegas homes may be headed to foreclosure as notices of default and trustee sales slowed in April.

May 18, 2011  Texas businessman Chris Milam’s plans to buy the Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A Pacific Coast team) and build a multisport athletic venue at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip in partnership with baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. The 51s sale, which could be completed as early as this summer, hinges on securing financing and would be one of several pieces to the development. It would include a 9,500-seat ballpark for the 51s; a 36,000-seat stadium for professional soccer; and a 17,500-seat arena that is being positioned as a possible future home for the National Finals Rodeo and the Professional Bull Riders finals.

May 19, 2011  Sorry to say but Don Barden, proprietor of Fitzgeralds in downtown Las Vegas and the first African America to own a national casino company, died this morning from complications stemming from lung cancer

Following the closure of his show at the Sahara, magician Rick Thomas will temporarily fill the gap at the Saxe Theater in the Miracle Mile Shops in Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. It will be his home until his new showroom at the Riviera is open. For now, Thomas and his tigers will perform at 3 p.m. daily starting June 3.

Las Vegas ranks No. 1 for men in financial distress according to Men’s Health Magazine..

May 20, 2011  The Nevada Gaming Commission has unanimously approved Penn National Gaming’s acquisition of the M Resort Spa Casino. M Resort founder and CEO Anthony Marnell III will continue to run the property.

May 21, 2011  No news is sometimes good news as the apocalypse that was predicted came and went without anything happening at 6 pm in Las Vegas and around the world. What a shock (LOL).

May 22, 2011  New retailers have been added to the Fashion Show Mall including Pinto Ranch, Superdry, sunglasses retailer Oakley, jewelry store Tiffany & Co., shoe retailer Chinese Laundry and clothing retailers Finish Line, Zumiez, Levi’s, True Religion and True Religion Kids. Restaurants Starbucks, Chipotle plus Red Velvet Cafe also agreed to leases at the center.

Is Photography Allowed in Casinos?

There seems to be some confusion about whether or not you can shoot photographs inside Las Vegas casinos. There is a popular belief that you can’t photograph in a casino. Most discussions about photographing in Las Vegas casinos usually deal only with the legal aspects but like most things there is at least one other aspect to consider.

The legal aspect::

The first thing to understand is that regardless of where you photograph in the United States, you actually have a lot more rights than you might think. Without getting into the details of your legal rights, a good place for every photographer to check out is the United States Copyright Office website. Photography in public places is fully covered by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This means that you should be able to legally photograph as much as you like in a Las Vegas casino. As Randy Sayre, a member of the Nevada Gaming Control Board, said of shooting photos in Nevada casinos back in 2009, “There are no rules against (photography), and there are no rules or regulations that govern it.”

The non-legal aspect:

Although you can legally photograph in Las Vegas casinos, you should always consider the following: Casinos are businesses and businesses are allowed to escort out or deny access to anyone they want to for pretty much any reason they want. If you cause a disruption in any part of the casino while photographing it (such as blocking an aisle or bothering other guests), you can and probably will asked to leave and perhaps even escorted out. Casino personnel, however, cannot legally “manhandle” and/or detain you unless you forcibly resist and you should not be required to show anyone your photos after you have taken them.

In conclusion: Although it is not illegal to take photographs in Las Vegas casinos (or pretty much everywhere), it is best to shoot your photographs as quickly and quietly as possible and move on. Have fun!

Why Women Can Be Charged Less

You may have noticed that in Las Vegas (and many other places) that women are often charged less or maybe nothing to get into many nightclubs, bars, pools, etc.. Of course, women probably aren’t likely to mind but some men might think that it’s blatant discrimination and therefore that it’s very unfair and perhaps illegal. Well it’s not illegal and the reason is actually quite simple.

Private organizations which includes businesses are not subject to the Bill of Rights. Bars, nightclubs, and pools are not required to abide by the Fourteenth Amendment which applies to the States and not private entities. Under federal law, a business can charge anyone whatever cover or fee they want to, whether it’s based on age or gender, for example. That is what makes "Ladies’ Nights," senior discounts, and customer loyalty offers possible. A business or private organization can not, however, discriminate on grounds of race because that’s covered by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits "discrimination or segregation of any kind on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin."

Some states, including California, Maryland, and Wisconsin, do have laws banning Ladies’ Nights and their attendant gender/pricing discrimination but Nevada and most states do not. That’s why women can and often are charged less to get into bars, nightclubs and pools that have covers in Las Vegas and many other places.
