June 13 to 19 – Recent Las Vegas News

Here’s some of the news relevant to or about Las Vegas Nevada that came out during the last week:

June 13, 2011 Car Care World Expo, a mid-sized convention staged by the International Carwash Association, has reversed its intention to go to Chicago in 2013 and will instead remain in Las Vegas.

June 14, 2011 According to figures released by OTA Kayak.com, "Las Vegas" was the most searched destination for hotels for travel this summer, accounting for 7.36% of the search share from March 1 to May 25 for travel from June to August.

Anthony Carleo, the son of a Las Vegas judge who was accused of armed robberies at both Bellagio and the Suncoast last year, has pleaded guilty to both and faces between 3 and 36 years in prison for each incident. A sentencing hearing has been set for August 23rd.

After months of speculation as to the possible future of the Palms resort, it’s today been announced that the Maloof family has agreed to partner with private investment firms TPG and Leonard Green & Partners in order to significantly reduce the amount of debt on the company’s balance sheet, subject to regulatory approvals.

June 15, 2011 The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) has approved contracts for 10 international offices in an effort to increase foreign visitation to the city. Offices will be in Canada, Mexico, Japan, several western European nations, Australia, China, Brazil and Russia, at a cost of $3.5 million over two years, while board members authorized a request for proposals for representation in South Korea, India, and France.

The Las Vegas Monorail, which has been in trouble since before it opened and finally filed for Chapter 11 protection in January, has announced that it must expand or face closure within eight years. High fares, a limited route, and a refusal to work with third parties (we have attempted on many occasions to include a Monorail deal in the MRB, only to be told repeatedly that, "we never offer discounts"), have been among the factors conspiring to keep the project from profitability. Lack of service to and from the airport and downtown has been seen as very detrimental to the Monorail’s usefulness.

The Las Vegas City Council voted unanimously to roll back the sale price of the Las Vegas City Hall property at Fourth and Stewart streets by $7 million to help bring Zappos.com’s headquarters to downtown.

June 16, 2011 There was a five-hour wait to gain access to the Sahara liquidation sale that started at 10am today.

Notices of default (foreclosure) in Clark County decreased 12.9% in May, dropping to 3,539 which is the lowest number since August 2009, the online foreclosure listing firm reported. Notices of trustee sale were down 3.8% for the month to 4,438.

June 17, 2011 The former Terzetto Restaurant and Oyster Bar at M Resort is now called Anthony’s Steakhouse, and it’s apparently serving a revised "innovative, yet traditional menu."

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval signed a bill that revises 2006’s Clean Indoor Air Act to permit adult venues like bars and taverns to serve food once more, while also permitting smoking.

Gov. Sandoval also signed into being the bill prohibiting drivers from texting or using hand-held cell phones while behind the wheel. The law goes into effect Oct. 1, but for the first three months police only will issue warnings; thereafter, officers will begin citing drivers who ignore the law, with penalties set at $50 for the first offense, $100 for the second, and $250 for the third infraction. After that drivers risk forfeiting their license.

The Nevada Board of Regents, which governs public higher education in Nevada, voted Friday to increase undergraduate fees by 13% in the upcoming academic year. Fees for graduate students will increase 5% in the upcoming year, and 5% more the year after that.

Las Vegas locals gaming leader Station Casinos LLC has finally exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection almost two years after seeking court protection.

June 18, 2011 It was reported that unemployment in Las Vegas rose to 12.4% in May, up from 12.0% in April.

With 28 of the planned World Series of Poker 58 events already finished, attendance is up 9.2% from last year. Also, the prize pool has grown 6%.

June 19, 2011 Happy Father’s Day! – While it’s hopefully is a great day for fathers everywhere, it looks like Nevada is a bad place for teenagers. New numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that Nevada tied for second in the nation for teen unemployment in April, with 34.5% of 16 to 19 years olds looking for a job unable to find one. That compares with a national average of 24.2%. If you include teens discouraged and no longer looking, and statewide joblessness in the age group rose to 36.2 percent in the month.

Beer Lovers Take Note

Already known as “Sin City” and the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas may soon also be known as the Beer Capital of the World (at least for a year). Beginning October 13th, 2011 every week Thursday to Sunday from noon to 11 pm for a year, Las Vegas will host something called the Las Vegas World Beer Fest. It will feature 500 different beers weekly along with 100 different microbrewers, cooking demonstrations, beer games, live bands and something called the Brewers’ conference. It will be is located behind Bally’s Hotel and Casino near the middle of the famous Las Vegas Strip. It will easily be accessible by walk, city bus, taxis and the Las Vegas Monorail plus there will be official festival shuttles. It’s expected to draw more than one million visitors. Check out the video below.

Las Vegas Beer Festival Promotional YouTube Video

Tickets to enter the festival and to sample the beers can be purchased at http://www.wbflv.com/ (where you can also get more information) or at the gate. Only 5,000 tickets (and package deals) will be available per day. Although Las Vegas has a huge number of places that serve beer, this is likely to be a beer lovers paradise.

‘Margaritaville’ casino to open in Las Vegas

The following is for Parrotheads and anyone who likes to have a good time. There’s a new casino scheduled to open in October in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip. Caesars Entertainment Corp. is going ahead with plans to open a $10 million Margaritaville themed gaming area in the Flamingo Las Vegas. This will expand the resort’s popularity among Jimmy Buffett fans as both the singer and the hotel turn 65 this year. The new gaming area will be adjacent to the Margaritaville restaurant in the former Steakhouse 46 location. Plans call for a 15,000-square-foot addition to the Flamingo’s casino with 22 table games and 220 slot machines. The Margaritaville restaurant in the northwest corner of the Flamingo has been "extremely successful" since it opened in 2004. Although it’s a rather small casino by Las Vegas standards, this one might prove to be a good place to spend some time (and money).
