July 18 to 24 – Recent Las Vegas News

Here’s some of the news relevant to or about Las Vegas Nevada that came out during the last week:

July 18, 2011 The North Las Vegas firefighters’ union voted to approve an agreement that will cut their base pay by 5 percent in order to save 35 jobs. The city of North Las Vegas has been in serious financial trouble for awhile and this deal will help save an additional $2 million on top of the $4 million in concessions firefighters made in May.

Wynn Resorts LTD (which operates casinos in Macau and Las Vegas) reported earnings of $122 million, or 97 cents a share, in the 3 months ended June 30, up from $52.4 million, or 42 cents a share, a year ago.

July 19, 2011 It’s been reported that the number of passengers going through McCarran International Airport rose 5.6% from 1 year ago, to 3.6 million, the strongest performance in nearly 4 years but that’s still about 13% lower than the peak year of 2007

July 20, 2011 Carluccio’s Little Italy, the restaurant formerly owned by Liberace that’s operated for 27 years on E. Tropicana, has closed.

A French tourist who was drunk and was critically injured Friday after falling from a Strip escalator while trying to surf down the escalator near Caesars Palace has died.

July 21, 2011 At a rally on the Strip this morning which featured showgirls, headlining entertainers and executives from Caesars Entertainment, Marie Osmond revealed a new digital display on the Bally’s marquee, clocking up the savings in resort fees that guests have accumulated collectively since July 5, 2010, by staying at Caesars’ properties in Las Vegas. The company claims that Las Vegas travelers are saving up to $1.16 per second, $100,000 per day, and $3 million per month — a total savings of $37 million to-date.

Apparently plans to renovate and reopen the Roadhouse casino in Henderson remain on hold today after a district court judge allowed a lawsuit filed by competitor Sunset Station LLC to proceed.

July 22, 2011 It was reported today that Nevada’s jobless rate rose for the first time in 2011 to 12.4 percent in June, up from 12.1 percent in May. In Las Vegas, the rate jumped to 13.8 percent.

Nevada’s first distillery debuted today with the launch of Nevada Vodka from George and Katalin Racz’s business located at 7330 Eastgate Road in Henderson.

July 23, 2011 Drier vegetation and hotter temperatures are prompting fire restrictions in western Nevada. State and federal officials say the restrictions took effect today and they affect public lands managed by the federal Bureau of Land Management’s Carson City district and all areas of the Sierra Forest Fire Protection District in Carson City and Storey County.

July 24, 2011 Apparently Legionnaires isn’t the only disease to hit some patrons of the Aria Resort & Casino. A doctor said two Arizona college students appeared to have caught Pontiac fever (a less serious cousin of Legionnaires) after the couple stayed at Aria on July 5th which is just after the period when patrons were warned they may have been exposed to the bacterium. Fortunately health officials have said that no new cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been reported among hotel patrons.
