Aug. 22 to 28 – Recent Las Vegas News

Here’s some of the news relevant to or about Las Vegas Nevada that came out during the last week:

Aug. 22, 2011 It was reported that McCarran International Airport continues to experience increased traffic, with the passenger count up 4.9% in July compared to the previous year. Spirit, JetBlue, American, and US Airways have all expanded their schedules, adding additional destinations and flights.

Aug. 23, 2011 Anthony Carleo, the son of a former Judge who robbed a Bellagio crap table at gunpoint last year, was sentenced this morning and will serve at least three years in prison before he is eligible for parole. He is still to be sentenced for a previous robbery at the Suncoast Hotel & Casino.

The $8.5 million renovation project at Primm Valley Resort & Casino that commenced in the fall of 2010 and was the Resorts’ first major upgrade since it opened in the ’90s, has been completed. Improvements include refurnishing the rooms at Buffalo Bill’s Resort & Casino, the addition of new carpeting for the casino floor, and the replacement of old lighting with eco-friendly, energy-efficient LED light bulbs. Primm Valley Resort & Casino underwent a massive renovation project to transform it into a premium boutique hotel.

According to a survey of international travelers by Hotels.com, Las Vegas has for a second time beaten out New York City to earn the honor of best destination in the U.S. to hail a cab. Those questioned were asked to rank taxis in various categories, including cleanliness, quality of driving, best value, and friendliest drivers.

Aug. 24, 2011 The Plaza Hotel & Casino held a soft opening today, ahead of its official Sept. 1 planned debut. The casino itself is due to open late morning, and rooms are available, listed at $40, but it sounds like the restaurants and other amenities have yet to come online.

It was reported yesterday by Las Vegas-based SalesTraq that new-home closings have decreased by double-digit percentages in each of the first seven months of 2011, and the year-to-date total of 2,067 is far below last year’s pace, which ended at 5,438. There were 38,705 new homes sold at the peak of the boom in 2005.

Aug. 25, 2011 Anthony Carleo, sentenced earlier this week to between three and 11 years for his 2010 armed robbery at Bellagio (see Aug. 23rd news) was sentenced today to an additional 6 to 16 year sentence, to be served consecutively, for a previous armed hold-up up the Suncoast Hotel & Casino.

Aug. 26, 2011 Cantor Gaming received final approval from state gaming regulators to operate the race and sports books at The Venetian and the Palazzo.

Nevada leads all states with 65 percent foreclosure sales according to California based foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc.

Lion King - 2 For 1 Special For Locals

If you have a valid Nevada ID (like a drivers license) or know someone who does and they want to go with you to see Disney’s Lion King, here’s a deal you might want to take advantage of. The Lion King at Mandalay Bay is thanking it’s local supporters by offering a special 2 for 1 ticket offer for orchestra and mezzanine seats through Dec. 18, 2011 as its two-and-a-half-year run on the Las Vegas Strip draws to a close. To purchase tickets taking advantage of this offer, call 702/632-7580 or visit the Mandalay Bay Box Office and mention the code "PRIDE" and show a valid Nevada ID. Blackout dates are Nov. 23 – 27, 2011. The Lion King has been highly rated and I think that there are discount tickets (probably not 2 for 1) available for non-locals if you look for them elsewhere. Enjoy!

The Las Vegas Power Pass packages admission to popular attractions in Las Vegas into one affordable sightseeing package

DUI Crackdown

I realize I am a little late with this posting and that not very one drives when they go to Las Vegas but there’s something that I think that locals and anyone who currently is in the Las Vegas area or who will be in the Las Vegas area in the next few weeks and who are planning to drive might find useful. As the Labor Day holiday weekend approaches, the Metro Las Vegas Police Departments and the Nevada Highway Patrol are stepping up their anti-drinking and driving efforts. This is a three-week crackdown which started last Friday (8/19/2011). There will be multiple DUI checkpoints across the valley and extra officers will be on the roads looking for traffic violations and motorists suspected of being impaired, with agencies working together across jurisdictions. "We will pull you over for anything and everything we can," Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Kevin Honea was quoted as saying recently. So the best idea is to be smart and responsible and don’t drive under the influence now or any time in the future. You can always phone or otherwise get a cab or call Designated Drivers at 702/456-RIDE (7433).

Nevada Car Repairs Among The Costliest

This probably isn’t a surprise to Nevada drivers but everyone else who drives to Las Vegas and elsewhere in Nevada might like to know that Las Vegas and Nevada in general (plus the most of the Southwest US (including California)) is an expensive place to break down and get their car repaired. CarMD (a Fountain Valley, Calif., car repair information company) warns that Nevada drivers pay more than other drivers almost anywhere in America. In its annual Vehicle Health Index, CarMD listed Nevada as the fifth-most expensive state in the United States to get cars fixed. Nevada fits in a particularly pricey West that included CarMD’s five most expensive repair markets, and seven of the top 10, based on combined average costs for parts and labor. The top five are Arizona ($421.49), New Mexico ($406.81), Colorado ($397.83), California ($394.49) and Nevada ($393.96).

Aug. 15 to 21 – Recent Las Vegas News

Here’s some of the news relevant to or about Las Vegas Nevada that came out during the last week:

Aug. 15, 2011 CityCenter has submitted plans to Clark County to implode the Harmon Tower. This is because the original number of stories has been cut in half due structural problems and a recent report from Clark County’s Building Division that claims it could completely collapse in an earthquake.

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas lost $54.3 million during the second quarter while its dining and nightlife venues continued to pull in more revenue than its casino and rooms.

Aug. 16, 2011 Bellagio has unveiled the first of its newly remodeled rooms in the main tower, incorporating new color schemes, sustainable materials, increased energy efficiency, and "180 percent improvement in air circulation." The $70 million remodel began in June and the property hopes to have all 2,568 Resort Rooms by mid-December.

Aug. 17, 2011 The protracted lawsuit between the Tropicana Las Vegas and Carl Icahn, owner of Tropicana casinos in Atlantic City and Laughlin, over use of the Tropicana name has been settled. The Las Vegas property will have the exclusive right to use the "Tropicana Las Vegas" and the "Tropicana LV" names and marks within 50 miles of its hotel-casino on the Strip, online, and for advertising purposes, while Icahn’s Tropicana Entertainment Inc. will have rights to use the "Tropicana" and "Trop" marks outside of the Las Vegas area.

Executives from Caesars Entertainment unveiled more specific details of Project Linq today, the most significant of which was news that the Imperial Palace will undergo a complete remodel, renovation, and rebranding, and that the adjacent O’Sheas will be demolished and the space it currently occupies incorporated into the new adjoining property. The Flamingo will also get a new pedestrian entrance connecting it with The Linq, which will feature 30 to 40 retail, dining, and entertainment attractions in a 200,000-square-foot open-air marketplace.

MGM Resorts International (MRI) founder Kirk Kerkorian has sold 20 million shares in the gaming company today lowering his stake in MRI from 27% to 22% (111 million shares).

Aug. 18, 2011 Clark County commissioners voted in favor of developer Jim Rhodes’ plan for a $2.3 billion development in the Blue Diamond Hill region, just outside the Red Rock Conservation Area. The 5-2 vote in favor of the project, which would involve constructing a massive master-planned community with 7,200 housing units on an area that’s long been a strip-mined wasteland, apparently followed hours of debate and years of public opposition from groups of existing area residents who oppose the proposal.

Aug. 19, 2011 For the fourth consecutive month, the jobless rate in Clark County climbed, hitting 14% in July.

Aug. 20, 2011 Nothing of interest to report about.

Aug. 21, 2011 It was reported today that in a stunning reversal, the 85 year old comedy king Jerry Lewis was just reinstated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Labor Day Telethon he has hosted since 1966, a source close to Lewis told Vegas Confidential. Jerry had just been eased out as host about 2 weeks ago because of what MDA called a “change of direction”. I guess the change of direction got a reversal of direction

CityCenter Rents Luxury Condos

I ran across an article at http://blogs.wsj.com/developments/2011/08/10/vegass-citycenter-replaces-luxury-condo-buyers-with-renters/ (The Wall Street Journal) called “Vegas’s CityCenter Replaces Luxury Condo Buyers with Renters” that might be of interest to anyone who wants to stay in Las Vegas for an extended period of time (1 or 2 years). The multi-towered complex at City Center has rented out in one and two year leases 346 units it once planned to sell as multi-million dollar luxury condos. Rents, which were signed for as little as $1,390 a month, are generally in the range $1,600 to $1,700 a month with two bedrooms going for about $2,300 a month. There’s no mention of whether there are more condos available to rent but you could find out if your interested.
