Happy New Years

I’ve made a few posts in the last few weeks about why you might want to (or should) visit Las Vegas for this year’s New Year’s Eve. As we start the weekend that this year has New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, its finally time to wish a very Happy New Years to everyone. As 2011 closes, I hope it was a great (or at least decent) year for everyone but as 2012 starts I hope that it will be a great (or at least better) year for everyone.

Shania Twain Tickets Available 1/1/12

Although the show itself doesn’t start for almost 11 months, I thought Shania Twain fans and other interested people might like to know that Caesars Palace recently started promoting the "one-year countdown" to the premiere of Shania Twain’s Las Vegas residency show called “Shania: Still the One”. The first show of her two year residency will be December 1, 2012. Tickets will be available beginning this Sunday, New Year’s Day, January 1, 2012 at http://caesarspalace.com or by calling 800-634-6661 with prices ranging from $55 to $250 plus applicable fees.

Dec.19 to 25 – Recent Las Vegas News

Here’s some of the news relevant to Las Vegas that came out last week that ended yesterday on Christmas Day:

Dec. 19, 2011 Studio 54 at MGM, which had been due to close Jan. 8, will now remain open through Feb. 4, 2012. The club is open from 10 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

Oscar Goodman’s (former Las Vegas mayor) signature steakhouse opened at the Plaza

Dec. 20, 2011 Happy Hanukkah - One giant menorah was lit up tonight under the Fremont Street Experience canopy to welcome the first night of Hanukkah

President Barack Obama signed into law today a bill that extends hydropower allocations from Hoover Dam for another 50 years and makes a portion of its electricity available to new customers.

The Clark County Board of Commissioners approved a $333,000 contract to extend a corridor that will be used by deplaning passengers from outside the United States. This will increase the number of international gates from six to seven.

Dec. 21, 2011 Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. was sentenced to six months in jail on a misdemeanor count of battery constituting domestic violence after pleading guilty Wednesday in Las Vegas Justice Court.

The Gold Coast Hotel & Casino celebrated its silver (25th) anniversary today.

Dec. 22, 2011 Las Vegas was ranked the No. 1 travel destination on Travel Leaders’ list of the top domestic destinations already being booked for 2012.

Dec. 23, 2011 The Nevada Gaming Commission has voted in favor of regulations that could pave the way toward Nevada becoming the first state to allow legal Internet-poker gambling within state borders and set the standard for regulatory controls.

Dec. 24, 2011 Christmas Eve - It was reported that the United Way of Southern Nevada brightened the holidays of more than 2,000 needy families this week with the help of a generous Secret Santa who donated $1 million to the charity. Each of the more than 2,000 needy families received a $500 Visa gift card.

The Department of Justice issued a 13-page opinion declaring that Internet gambling is legal between states where gambling is legal. The opinion is being hailed as a major step toward legalization, as it would allow states with legalized gambling (most) to work together to allow online gambling across state lines. Apparently, sports betting will still be prohibited, but the door appears to be open for poker and other forms of gambling.

Dec. 25, 2011 Merry Christmas – No real news and no snowfall in the Las Vegas area which has only seen a trace of snow three times in the last seven decades (1941, 1988 & 2008) -  I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.

The new location will be Buca’s third in Nevada and second within the city limits of Las Vegas (the first Las Vegas location is at 412 East Flamingo Road). If you have plans to go to Las Vegas for New Year’s Eve or didn’t have plans to go this year but changed your mind (and would like to go) and you don’t have a room and/or flight reserved, you can use either the “Click for up to $525 off Air + Hotel Packages” or “Click for up to 70% off Hotel Reservations” underlined links below to get reservations. You should know that because hotel occupancy is so high for New Years that some hotels are not available or require more than a 1 or 2 or 3 night stay and prices are usually high (some are very high) but then again so is the amount of fun you’ll probably have. Enjoy!

Dec. 12 to 18 – Recent Las Vegas News

Here’s some of the news relevant to or about Las Vegas Nevada that came out during the last week:

Dec. 12, 2011 Winnings for Las Vegas Strip casinos were up 13.3% at nearly $561 million for October compared with October of last year. Downtown casinos posted an 8.1% increase in October.

Dec. 13, 2011 Hotwire.com has named Las Vegas the #3 Top Deal destination for New Year’s Eve, citing average nightly room rates of $139. Orlando was the surprise winner, with rooms as cheap as $64. New York came in second, although the nightly rates there were $221.

Dec. 14, 2011 Industrial Road is going to have it’s name changed to Sammy Davis Jr. Parkway, leaving Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford the only two Rat Packers yet to have Vegas streets named for them.

Dec. 15, 2011 The Mirage is now offering a new Yoga with the Dolphins class at the Dolphin Habitat. More later.

Dec. 16, 2011 The Las Vegas’ MotorSpeedway’s multi-grooved wide racing surface, which heightened the dangers of pack racing on a high-banked oval, was singled out as a significant factor in a "perfect storm" of conditions that led to the death of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon in October, casting doubt over whether IndyCar racing should ever take place again at the track. IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard already has bought his way out of Year 2 of the Las Vegas contract, while the third and final year of the lease agreement is up for review pending further investigations.

The Cosmopolitan, whose casino operations have struggled since opening, has debuted a new high-limit room called The Talon Club which has exclusive hand-selected spirits in addition to high-stakes wagering.

Dec. 17, 2011 Blue Oasis Shrimp Farm, owned by Ganix Bio-Technologies, in July celebrated the grand opening of its 30,000-square-foot, $5 million operation miles north of the Strip.

Though not specific to Las Vegas, the rate on the most common type of mortgage hit a new low this week, as investors try to figure out what’s in store for the global economy.

Dec. 18, 2011 Nothing worth reporting for today but with a week before Christmas who cares.
