Dec.19 to 25 – Recent Las Vegas News

Posted By admin On Monday December 26, 2011 @ 4:30 AM In Las Vegas News | No Comments

Here’s some of the news relevant to Las Vegas that came out last week that ended yesterday on Christmas Day:

Dec. 19, 2011 Studio 54 at MGM, which had been due to close Jan. 8, will now remain open through Feb. 4, 2012. The club is open from 10 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

Oscar Goodman’s (former Las Vegas mayor) signature steakhouse opened at the Plaza

Dec. 20, 2011 Happy Hanukkah - One giant menorah was lit up tonight under the Fremont Street Experience canopy to welcome the first night of Hanukkah

President Barack Obama signed into law today a bill that extends hydropower allocations from Hoover Dam for another 50 years and makes a portion of its electricity available to new customers.

The Clark County Board of Commissioners approved a $333,000 contract to extend a corridor that will be used by deplaning passengers from outside the United States. This will increase the number of international gates from six to seven.

Dec. 21, 2011 Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. was sentenced to six months in jail on a misdemeanor count of battery constituting domestic violence after pleading guilty Wednesday in Las Vegas Justice Court.

The Gold Coast Hotel & Casino celebrated its silver (25th) anniversary today.

Dec. 22, 2011 Las Vegas was ranked the No. 1 travel destination on Travel Leaders’ list of the top domestic destinations already being booked for 2012.

Dec. 23, 2011 The Nevada Gaming Commission has voted in favor of regulations that could pave the way toward Nevada becoming the first state to allow legal Internet-poker gambling within state borders and set the standard for regulatory controls.

Dec. 24, 2011 Christmas Eve - It was reported that the United Way of Southern Nevada brightened the holidays of more than 2,000 needy families this week with the help of a generous Secret Santa who donated $1 million to the charity. Each of the more than 2,000 needy families received a $500 Visa gift card.

The Department of Justice issued a 13-page opinion declaring that Internet gambling is legal between states where gambling is legal. The opinion is being hailed as a major step toward legalization, as it would allow states with legalized gambling (most) to work together to allow online gambling across state lines. Apparently, sports betting will still be prohibited, but the door appears to be open for poker and other forms of gambling.

Dec. 25, 2011 Merry Christmas – No real news and no snowfall in the Las Vegas area which has only seen a trace of snow three times in the last seven decades (1941, 1988 & 2008) -  I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.
