Jan. 23 to 29 – Recent Las Vegas News

Here’s some of the news relevant to or about the Las Vegas area or Nevada that came out during the last week:

Jan. 23, 2012 Happy Chinese New Year! – A report from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation showed that Nevada’s unemployment rate fell from 13% in November to 12.6% in December. The unemployment for Las Vegas, unfortunately, went up from 12.4% to 12.7% in the same period

Jan. 24, 2012 Local nightlife impresarios Angel Management Group (AMG), and Hakkasan Ltd., a global restaurant brand, have announced today a partnership to launch a luxury restaurant and a new nightclub in the space formerly occupied by Studio 54 at MGM Grand. Hakkasan Las Vegas, which will occupy additional space and include both indoor and outdoor areas, is set to open next December.

Jan. 25, 2012 Chef Alex Stratta’s photograph was reported removed from the Wynn Las Vegas website. His remaining restaurant remains open and there has been no public rift. Alex, the renowned chef’s French gourmet restaurant at the property, was closed virtually without notice last year apparently against its namesake’s wishes.

It was reported today that Amonix, one month after losing it’s CEO in a fatal plane crash, is laying off about 200 people from its solar panel manufacturing plant in North Las Vegas.

Jan. 26, 2012 Apparently, Stetson’s Saloon and Casino on Boulder Highway has been closed for a remodel.

Nevada led all states with foreclosure sales accounting for nearly 57 percent of all home sales, RealtyTrac reported today.

It was reported that the latest traffic report from McCarran International Airport shows a surge in visitation last year, with the highest number of passengers (41.47 million) since 2008. The rebound is particularly striking since in 2010, for the first time in six years traffic dropped below 40 million.

Jan. 28, 2012 Patty’s Closet, which has several boutiques around the valley, has transformed the former Blue Diamond location into "YSparkle by Patty’s Closet," a new all-accessory store debuted today at 9345 S. Cimmarron Rd.

After a huge run up that began four years ago, the number of bankruptcy filings in Las Vegas dropped sharply last year. The 19,797 cases that were launched in 2011 marked a 18.4% decline from 2010.

Jan. 29, 2012 A Japanese billionaire, who happens to be largest stockholder and Wynn Resorts board member Kazuo Okada, filed a law suit in Clark County District Court recently to force Wynn Resorts Ltd. to open its financial books and records. Kazuo Okada controls almost 20 percent of Wynn Resorts Ltd and apparently is very angry about the spending habits of Wynn Resorts Ltd. Chairman Steve Wynn. More than a decade ago, Steve Wynn lost control of Mirage Resorts under similar circumstances. This could prove to be interesting.

MGM Grand Lion Habitat Closes Jan. 31st

One thing you can say about Las Vegas, whether for better or for worse, is that it is constantly changing. The free MGM Grand Las Vegas Lion Habitat attraction and the connected Habitat Retail Shop will permanently close next Tuesday, January 31, 2012. First it was the white tigers at Mirage and now it’s the lions at MGM. The MGM Grand Las Vegas Lion Habitat opened in 1999 for $9 million. The closing of the lion exhibit is said to be part of a comprehensive MGM renovation, which includes the closing of the nearby Studio 54 nightclub on Feb. 4. The club space is said to be expanding into a much larger nightclub/dayclub operation, creating the possibility of incorporating the lion habitat’s 6,000 square feet, plus about 3,000 square feet of connected retail space that is also set to close. If your in town and want to see this attraction either for the first time or one last time, you better hurry.

Bellagio Upgrade Completed

As if it wasn’t already one of the best hotels in Las Vegas if not the world, the six month long, $70 million overhaul of the five star rated Bellagio’s rooms and suites were recently completed. The $70 million renovation started last June and 2,568 rooms in the hotel’s main tower have been updated. The rooms were designed by the MGM Resorts International Design Group and they feature three different color palates — indigo and silver, plum and tea green, and butterscotch and amber. The guest rooms in the Bellagio’s main tower had not been renovated since 2004. The spa tower and the hotel’s suites, which were renovated in 2007, were not part of the upgrade. The rooms are listed as deluxe resort rooms and apparently are $20 to $30 more than rooms that were not part of the renovation. Rates for a stay during January in the new rooms are reported to start at $219 although lower rates may be available.

It was reported that gaming winnings plummeted to historic depths last year to comprise a record low 46 percent of total revenue. However, spending on other areas, including "food, beverage and other (related offerings)" among Nevada’s casinos hit a record high 34.1% of total revenues, according to figures released by the State Gaming Control Board.

Downtown’s Western Casino dealt its last hand at 2 am this morning and is now closed.

Jan. 17, 2012 The Las Vegas new home sales fell to a 23 year low in 2011, when new home sales fell to a low of 3,894. Dennis Smith, president of Home Builders Research Inc., said in a recent report that new home sales bottomed out last year and that some increase should be expected this year.

Continuing with real estate news: High-rise condos are selling for less than $200 a square foot, compared with up to $400/sq. ft. at the height of the market and sales fell 6% to 1,308 transactions in 2011

Jan. 18, 2012 The owners of Tivoli Village, the new outdoor mall that opened on the west side of town last year, have announced plans to build a 700,000-square-foot indoor shopping center called Renaissance across the street. The $350 million project is scheduled for completion in 2015.

In an unorthodox move, the bankrupt off Strip casino’s largest creditor, Canyon Capital, has announced that it will submit an opening bid of $60 million and possibly as much as $70 million, in a bid to eliminate low-ball bidders. The property was valued at the end of last year at just $46.6 million — $63.9 million when all the inventory and cash in operating accounts is taken into account — and the bidding process is not scheduled to begin officially until Feb. 10.

Jan. 20, 2012 Las Vegas made the list of "Most Stressful Cities" in the U.S., coming in at #2 behind Tampa Bay-St. Petersburg, FL.
