There’s a new exhibit opening soon at the Bellagio. The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art debuts a new exhibit beginning this Saturday, April 16th. "A Sense of Place: Landscapes from Monet to Hockney" is organized in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and will showcase landscapes by artists including Claude Monet, Marc Chagall, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Robert Rauschenberg, Christo, Vik Muniz, and others. File this under things you probably didn’t know about Las Vegas. Las Vegas is known for many things but art isn’t usually one of them. This is in spite of the fact that Las Vegas has a thriving art district. There is a large arts festival downtown on the “First Friday” of each month. This Friday (April 1, 2011) is, of course, the next one. “First Friday” is produced by Whirlygig, Inc., a Nevada non-profit arts organization founded in October 2002, in conjunction with more than 80 galleries, restaurants and retail businesses. “First Friday” has grown from 300 attendees in 2002 to recent monthly attendances of 5,000 to 10,000. It now encompasses more than 20 city blocks with five blocks closed to vehicular traffic to create a pedestrian area for the outdoor festivities.
