Valley of Fire Nevada State Park

Following last Friday’s posting about Red Rock Canyon, I thought that I would have another posting about another great opportunity for visitors to Las Vegas to to get out of town and see (and hike if you want to) a great example of a beautiful natural area. The Valley of Fire State Park, which is located about 6 miles from Lake Mead and 55 mile northeast of Las Vegas, offers another great day trip for Las Vegas visitors. The Valley of Fire is Nevada’s oldest and largest state park was dedicated in 1935. The valley derives its name from the red sandstone formations and the stark beauty of the Mojave Desert. Ancient trees and early man are represented throughout the park by areas of petrified wood and 3,000 year-old Indian petroglyph. Popular activities include camping, hiking, picnicking and photography. The park offers a full-scale visitor center (open 8:30 am to 4:30 pm) that has extensive interpretive displays. Entrance fees are currently $10 and other fees may apply.
