Apparently, sports betting will still be prohibited, but the door appears to be open for poker and other forms of gambling.

Dec. 25, 2011 Merry Christmas – No real news and no snowfall in the Las Vegas area which has only seen a trace of snow three times in the last seven decades (1941, 1988 & 2008) -  I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.

Dec. 12 to 18 – Recent Las Vegas News

Here’s some of the news relevant to or about Las Vegas Nevada that came out during the last week:

Dec. 12, 2011 Winnings for Las Vegas Strip casinos were up 13.3% at nearly $561 million for October compared with October of last year. Downtown casinos posted an 8.1% increase in October.

Dec. 13, 2011 Hotwire.com has named Las Vegas the #3 Top Deal destination for New Year’s Eve, citing average nightly room rates of $139. Orlando was the surprise winner, with rooms as cheap as $64. New York came in second, although the nightly rates there were $221.

Dec. 14, 2011 Industrial Road is going to have it’s name changed to Sammy Davis Jr. Parkway, leaving Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford the only two Rat Packers yet to have Vegas streets named for them.

Dec. 15, 2011 The Mirage is now offering a new Yoga with the Dolphins class at the Dolphin Habitat. More later.

Dec. 16, 2011 The Las Vegas’ MotorSpeedway’s multi-grooved wide racing surface, which heightened the dangers of pack racing on a high-banked oval, was singled out as a significant factor in a "perfect storm" of conditions that led to the death of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon in October, casting doubt over whether IndyCar racing should ever take place again at the track. IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard already has bought his way out of Year 2 of the Las Vegas contract, while the third and final year of the lease agreement is up for review pending further investigations.

The Cosmopolitan, whose casino operations have struggled since opening, has debuted a new high-limit room called The Talon Club which has exclusive hand-selected spirits in addition to high-stakes wagering.

Dec. 17, 2011 Blue Oasis Shrimp Farm, owned by Ganix Bio-Technologies, in July celebrated the grand opening of its 30,000-square-foot, $5 million operation miles north of the Strip.

Though not specific to Las Vegas, the rate on the most common type of mortgage hit a new low this week, as investors try to figure out what’s in store for the global economy.

Dec. 18, 2011 Nothing worth reporting for today but with a week before Christmas who cares.
