Parking Lot At Las Vegas Sign To Expand

Okay so this posting like many others might not be very important to most people but if you’ve ever tried or ever want to try to get a photo of the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign or if you just want know as much about Las Vegas as possible, you might find this posting interesting.

The 10 space parking lot at the famous and very popular “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada” sign has become so crowded at times that Clark County will spend $500,000 to add 20 more spaces. The 53-year-old sign, which is on the median of Las Vegas Boulevard South just south of Mandalay Bay, is ground zero for tourists who flock to the Las Vegas icon to have their picture taken. Dodging traffic to get to the sign became a dangerous endeavor, so the county built the parking lot to provide better access. But the line for photos is still long, and Denis Cederburg, the county public works director, said more parking spaces are needed. No completion date has been given but since it’s a safety issue and I’ve had difficult getting photos of the sign myself in the past, I hope it’s completed soon.

The Las Vegas Strip GameWorks is closed

Bad news for fans of the GameWorks arcade/restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip (between M&M’s World and the giant Coca-Cola bottle). High rent and too few customers forced the part-arcade, part-restaurant that opened 15 years ago to close within the last month. But just because GameWorks won’t be on the Strip anymore doesn’t mean it won’t be in Las Vegas. The company, which is headquartered locally, is looking at potential sites around the area to open a new location that will focus on serving locals more than tourists. Hopefully the new location will be fairly easily accessible to tourist who are interested.

Las Vegas Urban Sprawl

As you are probably aware, the Las Vegas area has grown tremendously over the last few decades, at least until the downturn a few years ago. When the Landsat 5 satellite was launched on March 1, 1984, Las Vegas was a much smaller city. NASA has created a series of images, done in honor of the satellite’s 28th birthday, that shows the massive growth spurt since 1972. Check out the 39 second YouTube video that follows for a unique way to see how much the Las Vegas area has grown in the last 40 years.

Take Care On The Roads

The Las Vegas Metro Police is urging drivers and pedestrians to take care on the roads. There has been at least19 traffic related deaths in Las Vegas already this year which is more than double the number at this point last year. On Saturday February 18th alone, five fatalities occurred in three separate accidents, including three teenagers. The escalation in traffic accidents seems to be coinciding with the Las Vegas Metro Police’s enforcement of the new ban on handheld devices which took effect on January 1st of this year. So far, more than 1,000 citations have been issued to drivers in southern Nevada caught violating the ban.

New Las Vegas Reality Show Coming

Do we really need another reality show? I guess so because although the name of the show and the date of the first show hasn’t been released yet, the Clark County Coroners office has partnered with a cable network and an independent production company to produce a new reality series about some of the 3,500 of those deaths investigated each year in the county. Apparently the county is promised $5,000 per episode and a guarantee that no personally identifiable characteristics of victims will be shown. Each show will also include a public service announcement featuring one of the coroner’s 202 currently unsolved cases.

School of Rock Now Open

Although probably not of much interest to visitors, the following might be of interest to area locals: School of Rock, the nationwide music school, just opened its first Las Vegas area location in Summerlin at 9340 W. New CSI Season Starts Tomorrow

So maybe this isn’t exactly about Las Vegas (since most of the series is shot at Southern California’s Universal Studios) but fans of CSI will be glad to know that "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (which is a show that centers around the Las Vegas Police Crime Lab) will have it’s 12th season opener tomorrow night (9/21/2011). The season opener (which had the cast and crew in Las Vegas in July to shoot at locations ranging from downtown’s Golden Nugget and Fremont Street Experience to Strip-adjacent sites on Tropicana and Hacienda avenues) has a new day (Wednesday), a new time (10 pm) and a new star (Ted Danson who plays the graveyard-shift CSI supervisor D.B. Russell who is newly arrived from Seattle’s crime lab). The season opener entitled "73 Seconds" focuses on a shooting on a tram between two fictional casinos. I wonder how long this show can keep going since 12 years is a long time for a TV show to last nowadays.

Allergy Sufferers Take Note

I’m usually don’t give not information which might discourage anyone from visiting Las Vegas even if it’s only for a short time or a given season but I thought that the following information might be useful to some of you. A national allergy study recently ranked Las Vegas as the second-worst city of 30 metropolitan areas in the United States (behind only Phoenix) for ragweed allergies.  Also in March, Pollen.com ranked Las Vegas the worst city for spring allergies because of the large amounts of mulberry, ash, and juniper in the air. It’s now illegal to plant new mulberry bushes in Las Vegas. I hope this information helps someone plan a more enjoyable trip to Las Vegas.

Is Photography Allowed in Casinos?

There seems to be some confusion about whether or not you can shoot photographs inside Las Vegas casinos. There is a popular belief that you can’t photograph in a casino. Most discussions about photographing in Las Vegas casinos usually deal only with the legal aspects but like most things there is at least one other aspect to consider.

The legal aspect::

The first thing to understand is that regardless of where you photograph in the United States, you actually have a lot more rights than you might think. Without getting into the details of your legal rights, a good place for every photographer to check out is the United States Copyright Office website. Photography in public places is fully covered by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This means that you should be able to legally photograph as much as you like in a Las Vegas casino. As Randy Sayre, a member of the Nevada Gaming Control Board, said of shooting photos in Nevada casinos back in 2009, “There are no rules against (photography), and there are no rules or regulations that govern it.”

The non-legal aspect:

Although you can legally photograph in Las Vegas casinos, you should always consider the following: Casinos are businesses and businesses are allowed to escort out or deny access to anyone they want to for pretty much any reason they want. If you cause a disruption in any part of the casino while photographing it (such as blocking an aisle or bothering other guests), you can and probably will asked to leave and perhaps even escorted out. Casino personnel, however, cannot legally “manhandle” and/or detain you unless you forcibly resist and you should not be required to show anyone your photos after you have taken them.

In conclusion: Although it is not illegal to take photographs in Las Vegas casinos (or pretty much everywhere), it is best to shoot your photographs as quickly and quietly as possible and move on. Have fun!
