Splash Canyon opening delayed

This posting should be considered “future things to do”. The planned May opening of a $20 million water park called Splash Canyon in the southwest valley has been delayed until the spring of 2013. The 25-acre complex of pools and slides is currently under construction near the Las Vegas Beltway and Sunset Road. It was originally supposed to be open for Memorial Day this year. Previously announced amenities for the park include 20 slides (including 7 story speed slides and a head first mat racer), a wave pool, lazy river, water playground and toddler pool. Also, the park will feature private cabanas, a large picnic area, more than 1,000 lounge chairs and misters for customers.

The project is estimated to employ 15 full-time staff and 500 seasonal employees. Those who have already purchased 2012 season passes for Splash Canyon have the option to get a full refund or to roll their pass over to 2013 for half price. Also, customers who have already purchased 2012 season passes should have already received an e-mail with specific instructions for refunds.

"Wings over the Springs"

Okay so maybe you don’t think of nature when you think of Las Vegas but that doesn’t mean that you can’t see some of nature’s finest winged creatures take flight. Las Vegas was founded initially because of springs that made it a water stop for those in the area and the "Wings over the Springs" event is back at Springs Preserve with the chance to see a Eurasian Eagle Owl, Saker Falcon, Barbary Saker Falcon, Lanner Barbary, African Hawk Eagle, Barbary, Red Necked Falcon and more take flight. Shows take place at 11 am and 1 pm every Saturday and Sunday, and school holidays. The Springs Preserve is at 333 S. Valley View Blvd. at US 95 and it’s open daily from 10 am. to 6 pm. You can get driving directions at http://www.springspreserve.org/apps/location/findus/index.html, more information about “Wings over the Springs” at http://www.springspreserve.org/apps/event/details.cfml?id=226 and information about the Springs Preserve at http://www.springspreserve.org/index.html. Vegas Xtreme Paintball Now Open

Here’s something new that just opened last Saturday that you might want to check out. Vegas Xtreme Paintball opened last weekend following a yearlong process of turning the dilapidated Jupiter Golf Center at 70 W. Craig Road, North Las Vegas into a three-field paintball park. Chris England, an officer at Nellis Air Force Base, spent the first year of his five-year lease renovating the 7,500 square-foot building that houses an arcade building the three outdoor fields, one of which will feature a “three-sided castle” complete with towers. The facility will host tournaments, parties and provide instruction on the sport. Besides the arcade, it will also have a miniature golf course that will open next summer. An all-day pass without equipment rental will be $25. The center will offer players .50 caliber markers as well as other equipment like masks. It will be open to players ages 10 and up. Although it opened last Saturday, it will hold it’s official grand opening on Friday February 3rd with a three-man tournament.

Wondering what holiday attractions and things to do (both free and fee based) there are in the Las Vegas area? The list includes Santa Claus, displays, shows, glittering lights, ice skating, a holiday cactus garden plus much more.
