Happy New Years

I’ve made a few posts in the last few weeks about why you might want to (or should) visit Las Vegas for this year’s New Year’s Eve. As we start the weekend that this year has New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, its finally time to wish a very Happy New Years to everyone. As 2011 closes, I hope it was a great (or at least decent) year for everyone but as 2012 starts I hope that it will be a great (or at least better) year for everyone.

I’ve made several posts about Christmas in Las Vegas recently. As we start the weekend that this year has Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, its finally time to wish a very Merry Christmas to everyone. Whether you view Christmas as a deeply religious time or just enjoy the Christmas season as a period of giving and a great time to be with family and friends, I hope that everyone has a great Christmas. Enjoy!

South Point Adds Free Internet Poker Site

In case anyone is interested, the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa recently launched a free play Internet poker website. South Point owner Michael Gaughan announced the website at a news conference at the Global Gaming Expo (G2E 2011) last week. People who wish to sign up can access the site at http://southpointcasino.com. The site will offer cash and noncash prizes to poker players, including trips to the 2,200-room hotel-casino on the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard to compete in live poker events. Considering what’s happens with the closing of several online poker sites recently, this might be a good free alternative.

DUI Crackdown

I realize I am a little late with this posting and that not very one drives when they go to Las Vegas but there’s something that I think that locals and anyone who currently is in the Las Vegas area or who will be in the Las Vegas area in the next few weeks and who are planning to drive might find useful. As the Labor Day holiday weekend approaches, the Metro Las Vegas Police Departments and the Nevada Highway Patrol are stepping up their anti-drinking and driving efforts. This is a three-week crackdown which started last Friday (8/19/2011). There will be multiple DUI checkpoints across the valley and extra officers will be on the roads looking for traffic violations and motorists suspected of being impaired, with agencies working together across jurisdictions. "We will pull you over for anything and everything we can," Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Kevin Honea was quoted as saying recently. So the best idea is to be smart and responsible and don’t drive under the influence now or any time in the future. You can always phone or otherwise get a cab or call Designated Drivers at 702/456-RIDE (7433).

Nevada Car Repairs Among The Costliest

This probably isn’t a surprise to Nevada drivers but everyone else who drives to Las Vegas and elsewhere in Nevada might like to know that Las Vegas and Nevada in general (plus the most of the Southwest US (including California)) is an expensive place to break down and get their car repaired. CarMD (a Fountain Valley, Calif., car repair information company) warns that Nevada drivers pay more than other drivers almost anywhere in America. In its annual Vehicle Health Index, CarMD listed Nevada as the fifth-most expensive state in the United States to get cars fixed. Nevada fits in a particularly pricey West that included CarMD’s five most expensive repair markets, and seven of the top 10, based on combined average costs for parts and labor. The top five are Arizona ($421.49), New Mexico ($406.81), Colorado ($397.83), California ($394.49) and Nevada ($393.96).

CityCenter Rents Luxury Condos

I ran across an article at http://blogs.wsj.com/developments/2011/08/10/vegass-citycenter-replaces-luxury-condo-buyers-with-renters/ (The Wall Street Journal) called “Vegas’s CityCenter Replaces Luxury Condo Buyers with Renters” that might be of interest to anyone who wants to stay in Las Vegas for an extended period of time (1 or 2 years). The multi-towered complex at City Center has rented out in one and two year leases 346 units it once planned to sell as multi-million dollar luxury condos. Rents, which were signed for as little as $1,390 a month, are generally in the range $1,600 to $1,700 a month with two bedrooms going for about $2,300 a month. There’s no mention of whether there are more condos available to rent but you could find out if your interested.

The Luxor Las Vegas Seeks Local Artists

There will be a 2011 Juried Show at the Luxor Las Vegas that will expose the selected artists who are working in contemporary visual arts to a wide audience. The Luxor has three alcoves in the main front desk area that it’s opening up to local artists for the 2011 Juried Show, which highlights exceptional works of art in the Southern Nevada region. All 2-dimensional media will be considered, but there must be a theme linking all three pieces of submitted artwork and the judges are particularly looking for imagery and designs that relate to contemporary Egyptian or Moroccan culture and/or the specific site of Luxor itself. All entries must be submitted by Thursday September 1, 2011 to be considered. Visit http://luxor.com/call_for_artists/ for more information.

Microbreweries in Las Vegas

The following is for beer lovers who want to try out some beers from one or more of the local microbreweries.

Microbreweries in casinos:

  • Triple Seven Restaurant and Microbrewery inside the Main Street Station Casino Brewery Hotel has several fine brews including Black Cherry Stout and Hefeweizen that are available to players throughout the casino.

  • Barley’s Casino and Brewing Company -  this Station-owned casino in Henderson (4500 E. Sunset Rd.) offers slots and video poker, plus a race and sports book, but no table games. They also serve Barley’s range of  beers from their on-site microbrewery that are available to any player on the casino floor.

  • Chicago Brewing Company offers an extensive menu of microbrews inside the Four Queens. The beers are available as comps to video poker/slot players in the restaurant bar but not to slot players on the main casino floor; a couple of their brews are on tap at the King’s and Palace Bars that are available as comps only through the pit. A 2nd venue on the west side at 2201 S. Fort Apache offers their full beer menu to video poker players.

  • Ellis Island Casino & Brewery -  this popular off-Strip venue serves microbrews on the gaming floor as well as offering slots, video poker, blackjack, roulette, and craps. The microbrews are available to players at the group’s various Village Pub video poker bars throughout the valley, too.

Microbreweries in bars and taverns, where you can enjoy their distinct brews while playing video poker including:

  • Big Dog’s—Popular sports bars that have three venues (6390 W. Sahara, 1511 N. Nellis, and 4543 N. Rancho), all of which carry Big Dog’s range of beers. ales, and stouts.

  • Tenaya Creek Brewing Company– A local brewery that supplies its brews to a lot of liquor stores, bars, and restaurants around town but on any casino floor that I know of. You can enjoy them while playing video poker at the main location at 3101 N. Tenaya Way (just west of Cheyenne).

Enjoy!
